A week after hotel mogul Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart chastised the tourism minister Ed Bartlett over his running of the sector, the two held talks in Kingston yesterday.
Bartlett confirmed last evening that he and the Sandals Group chairman met at Devon House to discuss a range of issues critical to the growth and development of the tourist industry.
He described the discussion as fruitful, adding that it ended with an understanding on the way forward and a commitment to working together.
In a scathing attack last week, Stewart said the Tourism Minister was touting the increased arrival numbers while ignoring the operations side of the industry.
However, in a joint statement last evening, the tourism ministry and the Sandals Group said there is now agreement on the need to expedite the nation’s ability to measure the full impact of the tourist sector on the Gross Domestic Product.
The statement said this will be done through the implementation of a tourism satellite accounting mechanism.
