Jamaica’s education minister says a new policy has been developed for the selection of the chairman and members of a school board.

He says minimum standards have been set in terms of [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]education[/COLOR][/COLOR] qualification and knowledge in managing a public school.

He says in keeping with good governance practices, public school principals will no longer be allowed to nominate persons to chair the school boards.

Instead, Holness says the Member of Parliament for the constituency in which the school is located as well as representatives of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) and the Parent Teachers’ Association ([COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]PTA[/COLOR][/COLOR]) will elect the school board chairman.

The education minister says the new policy will be submitted to the Cabinet and implemented within a month.

What qualifies the Member of Parliament of the area to be one of the selectors of the school board. Typical. Politicians granting themselves powers and privileges where they should have none. I've never heard of something like this.

No, no, no to MP's having anything to do with school boards.

that is the way it is done in the US as well. You have political appointee on every district school board that I know of or state colleges, done by the gov. of each state or local politicians.

When me think of the MP for my Parish & judging by his actions - I do not get the feel that he cares one iota about the welfare of my former schools.
