Jamaica’s education minister says a new policy has been developed for the selection of the chairman and members of a school board.
He says minimum standards have been set in terms of education qualification and knowledge in managing a public school.
He says in keeping with good governance practices, public school principals will no longer be allowed to nominate persons to chair the school boards.
Instead, Holness says the Member of Parliament for the constituency in which the school is located as well as representatives of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) and the Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) will elect the school board chairman.
The education minister says the new policy will be submitted to the Cabinet and implemented within a month.
