A Northern Caribbean University (NCU) student was killed last night in a fight with her boyfriend, a JDF soldier.
The student, 23-year-old Shannel Norris had her throat cut, the police said.
The Constabulary Communication Network said this morning that the soldier is being interviewed by lawmen for the killing.
Reports from the Mandeville Police are that about 6:45 pm, the 47-year-old reserve soldier and the student were travelling in the soldier’s motorcar when an argument developed. It is alleged that he pulled a knife and slashed the throat of Norris, killing her on the spot. He was later picked up by lawmen at the nearby JDF training camp.
This is the second such incident in Mandeville in the past week.
On Sunday, Tashoy Spencer, a 19-year-old student nurse, was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend, 32-year-old security guard Neil Anthony, during a domestic dispute in Resource District, Manchester.
The Mandeville CIB reports that Spencer was visiting her boyfriend at his home in Resource district when an argument developed between the two, during which Anthony reportedly used an ice pick to inflict a wound to Spencer’s neck. He then fled the scene.
Councillor for the Mandeville Division Sally Porteous said Norris was the sports director of the United Student Movement and had great promise for a bright and successful future.
“It is inconceivable that anyone could allow themselves to get so out of control, to become so vindictive and so pathologically violent that a relationship should end like this,” Porteous said. “I am appealing to everyone in a relationship, if you find that you are getting obsessive and out of control, go and seek help right away.”
She warned young women in relationships with controlling men to leave.
