  • Calls for revision of fines for traffic offences

Assistant Commissioner of Police Novelette Grant is calling on the government to review some of the fines for some traffic offences.

<SPAN class=news_body>She says most acts of corruption among the members of the force take place on the road and reducing some fines would help cut corruption.

Speaking on TVJ Wednesday morning, ACP Grant said the logic behind the thinking is that if the fines are reduced more persons would be willing to pay them instead of offering bribes to police officers.

She also stressed that members of the public need to play their part in reducing corruption among members of the force.

ACP Grant also backed calls for better pay for rank and file members of the force as a way to reduce corruption.

ACP Grants pronouncement came in response to public outcry over a exposé attributed to a policeman.

In the interview the policeman confessed about corruption involving himself and other members of the force.

Last year several cops were kicked out of the force for corruption.

Meanwhile ACP Grant says measures are afoot to further improve the Witness Protection Programme.

According to her there are witnesses who do not meet the requirements for the formal Witness Protection Programme but who require protection and assurance.

She says the changes would help to maintain the integrity of the judicial process.

The JFJ had made such recommendations?

Perhaps not such a recommendation, but nowadays, when people talk about police corruption, there are fewer and fewer people with the heads in the sand. And the police force itself has acknowledged there is a serious problem. Certainly, the JFJ must be commended for creating such a climate of introspection.

        No?

bad recommendation... a reduction of fines to stem police corruption... ...comical at best... instead of focussing and solving the real problem (of corrupt cops) with sting opperations etc., this 'smart' asst. commishoffers up a kindergarten suggestion... a case of exposing ignorance through verbosity...
