Many Jamaicans who have access to cable television have seen The Maury Show at some time or another. One feature of shows like this is the frequent cases that have to do with the issue of trust and faithfulness between persons who share an intimate relationship. Usually, the female seeks to have her male partner come on the show in order to have a DNA test done to prove paternity of their child as there are doubts by one of them, or it may be a Polygraph test ("lie detector test") that is done to determine whether a partner has been faithful to the other. While the show is a manifestation of the vulgar and the coarse, it is also filled with lessons about trust, the violation of trust, and the painful and destructive consequences of people not being truthful to each other. They assume that these things can be easily and permanently covered under a web of deception.

What is true of intimate and spousal relationships is also true of the relationship between political leaders and ordinary citizens in areas of leadership and trust. Over the past few months our nation has been caught up in the saga surrounding the extradition request for a single individual, which has mushroomed into a trust issue between the people of Jamaica and their political leadership.
