Al Miller to take leave of absence from Fresh Start Programme
2010-07-01
Reverend Al Miller has disclosed that he will be taking a leave of absence as the head of the National Transformation Programme (NTP).
Reverend Miller is facing charges after he helped former fugitive Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke.
In a statement this afternoon, Reverend Miller said his decision was made to ensure there is no distraction or prejudice to this critical programme of National Transformation, while the legal process is being engaged over the next few weeks.
He also says he wants to give full attention to the preparation of his defence but more importantly, the defense of the principles of trust, truth, responsibility and justice!
He says these matters speak to some of the fundamental issues facing the nation that will enable us to make a quantum leap toward the transformation of Jamaica.
An arrest warrant was out for Coke when he was captured in Miller's sport utility vehicle along Mandela Highway last Tuesday.
In his defence, the clergyman claimed he was taking the accused crime lord to the United States Embassy in St Andrew, where Coke wanted to turn himself in.
After two days of questioning by detectives from the Organised Crime Investigation Division, Reverend Miller was charged with harbouring a fugitive and perverting the course of justice.
He’s out on $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
