Munster Road businessman gets 12 months suspended sentence

Garnett Pennington, the businessman charged with corruption in relation to the massive gun and ammunition find in East Kingston in February was today given a 12 months suspended sentence.
Sentencing was handed down by Georgianna Fraser in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Pennington had pleaded guilty to the corruption charge on June 9 with sentencing scheduled for today.
Pennington’s lawyer, Tom Tavares Finson, indicated that the businessman would give evidence for the Crown in the case against his co-accused Sergeant Russell Robinson.
Sergeant Robinson is to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on July 6 for a date to be set for him to go on trial.
The police had reported that Pennington and Sergeant Robinson attempted to bribe members of a police team who were arresting them, following the seizure of 18 guns and over 10,000 rounds of ammunition at a house on Munster Road on February 4.
Its alleged that Sergeant Robinson begged the arresting officers to let him go and Pennington offered them $200,000 in exchange for his release.
They were later each charged with breaching the Corruption Prevention Act.
