  • Lawyers slam state of emergency extension

THE Government's decision to extend the state of emergency has been criticised by the Jamaican Bar Association

, which says it is not a crime-fighting tool.

At the same time, the Jacqueline Samuels-Brown-led council has said the police are sufficiently empowered under standard laws.
"We are of the view that the powers that the police have under ordinary law, if carried out with resolute discipline and integrity, are sufficient to effectively control crime," the Bar Association said in a statement yesterday.
Government announced a state of emergency for Kingston and St Andrew on May 23, which was to last one month. However, it was extended to July 23, as the police

and army were granted powers to suppress crime and to capture its perpetrators. The measure was also extended to St Catherine.

The Bar Association said it was concerned that although a tribunal had been hastily set up to review the cases of detainees, no hearing was convened during the initial 30-day period.

All of a sudden people round here seem to be targeting lawyers. Yuh nuh think those that stand accused is entitled to legal representation? How me see it ... the lawyers have their work to do, the human rights groups have their work to do and the gov't have their work to do.
