The Portland police have charged three men with Friday's daring attempt to steal three out-board boat engines.
Two other suspects remain on the run.
Charged with simple larceny are 41-year-old Curtis Yapp of Duckis Road in Cambridge district, St James, 33-year-old Leon Powell of Ackee Main, Port Henderson, Portmore, and Everton Melvin of a Portland address. Yapp and Powell were held and chopped by irate fishermen who caught them stealing the boat engines shortly after 3 a.m. on Friday.
Police sources say the men reportedly sailed out to sea in three boats from the marina fishing village, but quickly abandoned two of the vessels, as the engines failed to start. The police say a fisherman riding in the dead of night spotted the vessels and quickly made an alarm.
The fisherfolk, armed with machetes and sticks, went in search of the suspects and found the men near Bryan's Bay attempting to unload the engine.
According to the police, three of the men managed to escape in a waiting motor car, while the other two were chopped and badly beaten.
Melvin, who the police say was identified as being the mastermind behind the attempted theft, later turned himself in.
Meanwhile, the police say Melvin has confessed to having stolen another boat last week. The police have since gone in search of the vessel and additional charges are to be laid against Melvin.
The theft of boat engines has been a long-standing problem. It is believed that the stolen engines are sold on the black market.
