Human rights group reserved about extending State of Emergency
Some human rights groups have expressed reservations about extending the State of Emergency.
Nancy Anderson, Legal Officer for the Independent Jamaica Council on Human Rights, says there is no clear reason why an extension is necessary.
“Most of our members would really be very cautious about it. We would really want to hear why the government thinks there’s a need for an (extension as) the (initial) reason for (the State of Emergency) seemed to have been because the security forces were not being able to go into Tivoli Gardens.
“What could be the reason now to extend it, that’s what we would like to know,” Mrs. Anderson said.
Susan Goffe, Spokesperson for Jamaicans for Justice, is cautioning the Government about extending the period as part of regular policing activities.
“We need to be very careful that we don’t have a shifting of the goal post. Having a specific, initial reason for instituting (the State of Emergency) doesn’t then lead to shifting the goal post, give different reasons and continue,” she said.
Mrs. Anderosn and Mrs. Goffee were speaking Wednesday evening on RJR’s current affairs discussion programme Beyond the Headlines.
