    Heading to court

    Harris-Barrington

    Barbara Gayle, Senior Staff Reporter

A SMALL local human-rights group has filed a suit in the Supreme Court challenging the one-month state of emergency which came into effect last month and blaming Prime Minister Bruce Golding for the recent unrest in downtown Kingston.

The group, Jamaican Forum for Human Rights, has named Prime Minister Bruce Golding, Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen and former Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin as the respondents.
Attorney-at-law Hannah Harris-Barrington, who has been living in Jamaica since December 2008, filed the suit on behalf of the group which is based in Hectors River, Portland.

Dr Clarice Ledwidge, bishop of the Ministries of Jessica Clarice Evangelist in Hectors River; Annette Marshall, a Tivoli Gardens resident, and other concerned citizens are the claimants.

Harris-Barrington, who is president of the group, was born in England of Jamaican parents and after practising as a British solicitor for many years came to Jamaica.

She said the aim of the group is not for publicity but to help the poor and underprivileged to get back their dignity and sanity.

"We don't need fame or fortune, we need justice for the people, especially those living in the garrisons", Harris Barrington told The Sunday Gleaner.
God sent me here to help because there are too many injustices going on," she added.

A date has not yet been set for the hearing of the claimants' application
seeking judicial review to challenge the state of emergency but Harris-Barrington said she expects to get a date this week. The suit was filed on May 27.

The claimants want a review as to whether the prime minster should vacate his seat and a review of what took place in West Kingston,
They also want a decision as to whether Golding should be held personally liable and pay compensation to any citizen who was harmed due to the recent chain of events.

In addition, the claimants want a public enquiry into what took place in Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston. The claimants said they spoke with Christopher 'Dudus' Coke several times last month and he told them of his desire to resolve the matter without any further loss of life.

    Damn?
Seems Dudus was meeting a whole host of persons. ...mmmm? ...was not such a hard man to find save and except for those who had to serve him court documents? Right?

I think these folks should be brought in for questioning. They spoke with Dudus several times last month? Maybe they are helping him to evade the warrant.

This is what I long for a real Human rights organization willing to challenge the narco-political arrangement instead of giving advice to the agrieved party.

Take note JFJ ! Put the arguements in front of the Jamaican Supreme Courts , i.e Taxation without representation M.Ps living out of thier constituency.

Campaign financing , redistricting , term limits , corruption. This is what I call true advocay , running around with placards after the fact is ridiculous !

        Challenge the status quo!
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

            Touched a nerve did I ?

How good it would be that a human rights organization challenges the narco political arrangement in a Jamaican Court

Taxation without representation, MPs dont reside in the constiuency but pass legislation to tax us everyday.

Redistricting based on the fact that MPs use brutal intimidation to get votes , what if a DON gives states evidence to support such a fact against an MP..e.g Bruce/Duduss or Seaga/Jim Brown ?

We have cases crying out to be put forward in our courts to deal with the so called de garrisonisation of Jamaica, we need a true human rights organisation with a judicial will.

I need to see the above action taking place 1st , referring it to some human rights organization in the USA wont do it for me , put it before the Jamaican supreme courts , show mi unnu serious.

The placards thing has its place , when unnu a pay lip service ! but put your grouses before the courts esp the narco political link as it pertains to perverting our constitution and deny citizens the right to vote freely and with fair representation by elected reps, I am a 100 % sure it will do more to de garrisonise Jamaica and make it more human rights friendly.

So how come no one could find Dudus to server him a summons to attend court for a litte ruling?
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

Boss the move was made by the lawyer from England , why hasnt the JFJ made said moves before ?

Are you telling me they couldnt present a case along said lines before the Jamaican supreme court ?

                      Hypocrytes !
