Government to introduce cess on imported dairy
The government is to introduce a dairy industry cess on products imported into Jamaica.
The cess will go toward financing local dairy farmers with a view to enhancing the international competitiveness of the industry.
The tax was recently approved by Cabinet and took effect on May 25.
“The cess will apply to the importation of milk power and fresh milk,” said information minister Daryl Vaz.
Vaz explained that the money from the cess will be collected by customs and paid over to the finance ministry on a monthly basis.
"The customs department will determine the methodology to be used in applying the cess," he said.
In addition, the agriculture ministry will monitor how the cess is being implemented and conduct reviews.
