Ambassador Audrey Marks says the Jamaican government is working on establishing a national arms database and a system to trace the origin of illegal firearms.
Police figures indicate that 80 per cent of murders in Jamaica involve the use of illegal guns.
Since 2000, the police have recovered more than five thousand illegal firearms and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition.
According to Marks, firearm legislation now before Parliament will also help the Government in tackling the gun problem.
