Kirkland Heights man held after cops seize illegal guns downtown
    Monday, June 07, 2010

A man who lives in Kirkland Heights was last night in police custody after cops said they found three illegal pistols at his business place on Princess Street in downtown Kingston yesterday.

Police did not name the man, but said they believe he is a close associate of Donald 'Zeeks' Phipps, the former Matthews Lane strongman who is now in prison on a murder conviction.

The three pistols -- a Smith and Wesson 9mm; Sturm Ruger semi-automatic; and a Colt .45 semi-automatic -- were among four illegal guns the police said they found in the sections of downtown Kingston under curfew since yesterday morning.

Police said the other gun seized was an Uzi with 11 rounds of ammunition. They also said they recovered an additional 129 rounds of ammunition, bringing the total to 140, as well as an undetermined quantity of cocaine.

The police also said that during the curfew 261 men were taken into custody. "Thus far, 87 of the 261... have been processed by detectives and released," a news release from the constabulary said, adding that the processing will continue today.

The curfew, which the police said was scheduled to be lifted at 2:00 am today, was imposed in the aftermath of the security forces' May 24 assault on Tivoli Gardens to execute an arrest warrant on Christopher 'Dudus' Coke and to restore stability to the community which was barricaded and from which gunmen launched unprovoked attacks on police and soldiers.

Seventy-three persons, including a soldier, were killed in that operation which also resulted in civilians and members of the security forces being shot and injured.

Two policemen were killed by gunmen in an ambush on Mountain View Avenue the night before the Tivoli assault as criminals loyal to Coke shot up and burnt police stations and attacked the security forces in sections of
    the capital.

Coke, who is now on the run, is wanted by the US Government to face drug- and gun-trafficking charges.

Yesterday, the security forces said they also discovered several illegal electrical connections on the businessman's Princess Street premises.

Following the seizure of the three pistols, police searched the businessman's home where they said they found a large sum of cash and a BMW X5 motor vehicle.
