• Bangarang: JLP seat declared vacant by Court!

The Supreme Court has declared the North East St Ann seat held by the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Shahine Robinson vacant.

The declaration was made during a sitting yesterday after the legal team for Mrs. Robinson failed to show up in court.

The ruling has implications for Mrs. Robinson’s participation in Parliament this afternoon in the no-confidence motion to be brought against the prime minister Bruce Golding by Opposition members.

The election petition against Mrs Robinson was filed by the People’s National Party’s Manley Bowen.

Mr Bowen had contended that Mrs Robinson was not qualified to sit in Parliament because she was a US citizen at the time of her nomination.

Already there have been three by-elections in constituencies held by Jamaica Labour Party MPs who were disqualified by the court because they had dual citizenship.

What exactly is the significance, if any, of the no-confidence motion other than making a statement? Anybody knows?

Not contested?
...seems like irresponsible behaviour...or one member of Likle Brucie's team saying to him, "resign"! ...and that 'no contest' would be like a message delivered with a club 'upside im ead'!

She said on RJR just now that she was not aware of the court date and had been present at every previous hearing while Manley Bowen who had opposed her had missed several court appearances

voting in the no-confidence motion. If it is vacant, legally she is not there. Shouldn't really matter anyway as the motion will probably be defeated 31-28.

no confidence vote basically is an official motion to the govt in parliament that the leader is not fit to lead the country... if the opposition has the votes and this would mean some from the govt would have to join the opposition, the prime minster either has to resign or dissolve parliament, in which case a general election would have to be called...

most of the time, the no confidence vote dont connect cause the opposition would need a few dissenters for it to have the intended effect... wi gwine find out if any dissenters are within the govt... i doubt it, but sometimes people vote dem conscience especially if dem see some impending event down the road from which they want to disassociate themselves...

But that don't mek sense. Don't after the adjournment of every court session the court says when next the going to meet? So if she was present at the previous hearing, how did she miss the next date? She wasn't listening?
