<SPAN class=bodytext>CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois University graduate Hopeton Dias has come a long way from begging as a child on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, and he is still going.
“Eastern has done the second leg of the relay my life is running,” said Dias, who donned cap and gown Saturday for EIU’s commencement ceremony. The sociology and pre-law graduate hopes to attend law school in California next.
Dias, 26, said he was born in the Kingston ghetto to a single mother with several children. Dias said, as a child, he decided to seek an education because this would provide a way out of the Kingston ghetto and the daily struggles for survival there.
To earn money for food and school, Dias said he begged and danced in the streets. He later worked at a supermarket. Dias said he was honest about his financial needs, his goals and his good grades in school with everyone he met.</SPAN> <P align=center><!--<span class="ad-label">-- Advertisement --</span>
