PNP group calls for boycott of parliament if Golding stays

THE Patriots, a group of young professionals aligned to the opposition People’s National Party, is warning that they will advocate for a total boycott of the Parliament if Prime Minister Bruce Golding does not resign.

The group said it plans to make the call at the party's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting tomorrow.

"We are appalled, that in the face of such a genuine public outcry regarding the prime minister’s deception from the members of the society including civil organisations that has resulted in a popular call for Mr Golding’s resignation, spokespersons of the Jamaica Labour Party as well as Government ministers have been attempting to further obfuscate the issue and are seeming to reject the expressed position of such a large contingent of Jamaican citizens and various associations," the group said in a release to the media.

Golding this week confessed in Parliament that he had given his blessing for members of his Jamaica Labour Party to seek the services of United States law firm Manatt Phelps and Phillips to lobby the US Government on behalf of Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

The US has formally requested Coke's extradition to face drug and gun running charges.

Yesterday 13 government senators signalled their support for Golding and praised his honesty for finally speaking the truth after two months of denial.

“Even if we were minded to set aside principles and give Mr Golding a proverbial ‘bligh’, we are unable to countenance the attempt by JLP insiders to sell Mr Golding’s confession as among other things a rare show of honesty,” the release said.

The group urged members of the ruling party to distance themselves from Golding and join them in the call for his resignation.

“It is time for at least one good man or woman in the JLP to speak out publicly that this entire scandal has entirely depleted the trust and confidence that the prime minister requires in order to continue to lead the country and call for Mr Golding’s resignation from within,” the group said.

I hope the PNP remember this. I sincerly hope they do it but live accordingly. Over the years they have refused to deal with corruption within their ranks while in the high office and brushed it aside.

"Is there not one good person left in the JLP? "

Apparently not ....thats why its best to have the PNP in power. As Dr. Phillip's said, they're ready to take back the country. Can you blame him? All the good people are in the PNP.

Blair as their watchdog did not have any real impact on corruption in the PNP. Individuals need to be prosecuted before there can be any meaningful changes in Jamaican society.

PRIME Minister Bruce Golding could be given an overwhelming seal of approval by the Central Executive of his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at its meeting today, but there are some within the ruling party's Parliamentary ranks who want him out.

The embattled prime minister, who admitted in Parliament last Tuesday to knowing about an effort to engage United States law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips to assist with extradition matters, has been under pressure to step down following the disclosure.

                    GOLDING... has offered to resign
[Hide Description] GOLDING... has offered to resign
                    [Restore Description]
                    1/1

He had initially denied that the Government had engaged the law firm, but last Tuesday said he sanctioned the deal, not as prime minister but as leader of the JLP and that it was the party, rather than the Government, that hired the law firm.

At least two Government MPs -- who spoke with the Sunday Observer on condition of anonymity -- are of the view that their leader should resign, as according to them, his actions have brought the party into disrepute. They fear that the JLP could suffer irreparable damage as a result of Golding's behaviour.

"It is disgusting. It is disgraceful. He really should step down and allow someone else to run the party and the country," one of the parliamentarians told the Sunday Observer.

"I believe in the principle of collective responsibility and I would not go on a public platform with this matter, at least not now, but if we are to grow up as a nation, we will have to stand by certain basic principles and our leader has compromised those principles," the member said.

The culture of leaders resigning over matters such as the Manatt, Phelps & Philips issue, is virtually foreign to Jamaica.

However, there is a growing view in some sections of the society that the fence that prevents politicians from making such a move should be torn down.

The other JLP parliamentarian with whom the Sunday Observer spoke said that Golding was walking a political tightrope and if he were to trip again, the party would be shattered.

"It would be better for the party and the country at this time if he were to resign, the member said.

"The whole 'Dudus' (Christopher Coke) extradition issue has divided the party, although (Information Minister Daryl) Vaz and some others will tell you that it is not so. There are officers in the party who believe that the US should get their wish, but somehow that feeling is not reaching those who can make it happen.

"Bruce should step down. Ken (Baugh) should run things in the interim, until the party goes through the process of having a formal selection process for the new leader," the member said.

According to sources in the JLP, Golding and others close to him miscalculated the extent of the impact that the revelation in Parliament would have had on the nation.

"Some of the JLP members of parliament thought that by simply admitting that he knew about the matter and was ready and willing now to come clean, it meant that it would have found sympathetic hearts across the county," one of the MPs said.

"They even chided the media in their own circles, saying things like 'a wha dem (media) a go do and say now', without realising the extent of the damage already done by the prime minister," said the other Government MP.

Golding has been deliberating his future with party officials in meetings mainly at his official residence, Vale Royal in St Andrew, over the past four days.

Yesterday, JLP insiders told the Sunday Observer that Golding had offered his resignation as JLP leader but it was refused. However, he insisted that it should be put to a vote at today's Central Executive Committee meeting in Ocho Rios, saying that he would withdraw the offer only if there was a unanimous 'no' vote. However, at least five senior members of the party are opposed, saying that a majority vote should suffice
