  • Portia says PNP will not cooperate with the JLP

The Opposition leader Portia Simpson Miller has warned that the People's National Party (PNP) will not be cooperating with the governing Jamaica Labour Party because of an offensive comment made by Prime Minister Bruce Golding in Parliament yesterday.

Mr. Golding questioned whether the current Opposition members are capable of demonstrating the perceived integrity their colleagues displayed between 1992 and 1995.

The Prime Minister was making reference to the stance of the then PNP government which refused to extradite anyone to the United States after the receiving state breached the treaty by trying Richard 'Storyteller' Morrison on charges for which he was never extradited to face.

However, Mrs. Simpson Miller, a member of that Cabinet during the period to which Mr. Golding referred, said the prime minister's statement was regrettable.

Despite her insistence, Golding was unmoved, and Speaker of the House Delroy Chuck said Golding was within his right.

Mrs. Simpson Miller said Mr. Golding's statement was very unfortunate, coming from the leader of a country.

She said the prime minister was insinuating that the Opposition had no moral authority and it therefore has no moral authority to cooperate with the Government on any issue.

The then PNP Govt denied Storyteller his rights to exhaust his appeals by shipping hym off to the US to stand trial..,it was reported he was then charged with crimes other than those stated in the extradition request.

We have yet to hear from Finson, and I really think if Lightbourne approves the request Finson will argue Dudus can choose the jurisdiction given the specifics of the case, and his right to a fair trial can't be guarantee given the battle pits two Govts against each other.

and that was what led to the standoff with the then govt and the US. not sure if it is true that he did not exhaust his appeals.
