Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

That is certainly a defense that would satisfy the PNP given their constant distinguishing btw party and govt. Not sure if it will work for the Jamaican people.

        Golding responds to Manatt controversy

        2010-05-11 17:30:52 | with audio | (0 Comments)

The Prime Minister Bruce Golding is remaining steadfast this afternoon that the Jamaican Government will not sign the extradition request for West Kingston businessman Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke.

Mr Golding was speaking in Parliament a short while ago.

There has been mounting pressure on the Prime Minister Bruce Golding to address the controversy over the administration’s refusal to sign the extradition request for Mr Coke.

However, the Government is insisting that the US illegally obtained the information on which it has sought to charge Mr Coke.

In Parliament this afternoon, Mr Golding says the Extradition Act also allows for the justice minister to request additional information from the requesting state if she is not satisfied with the information contained in the request.

Mr Golding insisted that the information in the Dudus case is unacceptable because it was obtained illegally.

He was deliberate in reiterating that under the Interception of Communication Act, information obtained from a wiretap can only be used for the purposes stipulated in law.

However, he says the United States has consistently refused to provide the additional information.

Like he did in February, Mr Golding today again said the Government would not hesitate to sign the request once it complies with the law.

Mr Golding elicited snickers in Parliament when he said the Dudus extradition request matter was not for the court.

This is despite his decision to have the court make a declaration as to whether the Justice Minister was right in denying the request.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Bruce Golding this afternoon revealed that he knew about the deal between the US law firm Manatt Phelps and Phillips and attorney at law Harold Brady.

Mr Golding said he had sanctioned the partnership between Mr Brady and the US law firm.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding said Mr Brady was engaged to lobby the US on behalf of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the treaty dispute and NOT the Government of Jamaica.

He also said the fee of US$49,000 was paid to the US law firm with funds from the financial contributors of the JLP and NOT Mr Coke.

We will have more on this story in the news at 7 p.m.

I hope this was meant for Lazie and Maudid because I am not a supporter of Bruce or this JLP-Brady-MPP situation.

so, why would the jlp be so concerned about what should be a state to state matter? i don't know if that admission helps bruce one bit.

if i were a contributor to the jlp i would wnt to know if some of my contributions had been used to pay MPP.

... and if it was the gov't that hired the firm, paying them with taxpayers' dollars then what would be your reaction?
