  • More police presence in Montego Bay

The police are to increase their presence in violence prone communities in Montego Bay, St James.

The national security minister Dwight Nelson made the disclosure yesterday following a closed door meeting with members of the business community to discuss the crime situation in the parish.

Senator Nelson says it was agreed that there needs to be more collaboration between the police, the government and business interests to jointly support efforts to fight crime.

The national security minister has also indicated that the intention is to increase the number of police personnel to about 200.

He says the business community has committed to providing some help with policing in Montego Bay and its environs, as well as social intervention programs.

Senator Nelson says a Resource Collaborative Committee has been established among members of the business community, with the aim of raising the needed funds.

The first meeting of the committee is expected to take place next week.

Funds raised are to go toward intervention programmes and crime fighting initiatives.

... mi curious, when the thugs move to Hanover, what then? I don't disagree with the increased police presence, but what about more aggressive measures?

Several gunmen robbed a returning resident in her home in Rhyne Park, Rose Hall the other day, and it is a pity locals are at the mercy of thugs.

Thanks to LLoyd B for his candid outburst and it is also true the politicians know the criminals and are in cahoots (or is it cohorts) with them

What do you think is the percentage of crime that is committed in Jamaica by gangs who have a political connections? For example in Spanish Town we have two gangs with political links, Clansman (PNP) and One Order (JLP).

                        WESTERN BUREAU:
Sections of Hanover could have been mistaken for the crime-ridden parish of St James on Thursday night after three gun-related incidents left one man dead and four others injured, including three men who allegedly opened fire on each other.
The partially burnt body of a man, who remained unidentified at press time, was found at the Orchard playing field yesterday morning by a passer-by.
The Gleaner understands that about 9 p.m., residents reported hearing explosions in the area. Some even disclosed that there was the smell of something burning as well.
"I have a feeling that the pressure police are putting on the criminals in St James might cause criminals to migrate to Hanover," said Horace Wright, president of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce.
"What I hope is that the police will be proactive in looking out for these men who may be looking for safe havens."
Following the shooting in Orchard, a man was shot and injured in the community of Kew.
Some time later, there was an incident in the Green Island area. It is alleged that two men went to the house of another man and a shoot-out allegedly ensued among the three. All three were injured and have been admitted to hospital.
