2. How on earth can a government entity (in fact, anyone) not know who is their specially invited guest of honor for a major official ceremony?

(I actually wondered to myself yesterday why on earth would Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest men on the planet, visit Jamaica for the opening of a regular international airport. That one just did not make sense!)

THE Airports Authority of Jamaica yesterday said singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett, and not Warren Buffett, as it had announced Monday, will be the celebrity visiting Jamaica on Friday.

Buffett, of Margaritaville fame, will be here on the special invitation of Chris Blackwell of Island Outpost and will be the first to land in his private jet on the upgraded Boscobel Aerodrome in St Mary, the Airports Authority said.


The facility will be commissioned later this month as the island's third international airport.

Buffett has built a small financial empire in Key West, Florida, written several best-selling books, and is a leading environmentalist.

Some Questions

Hey, settle down. I can see this happening in a George Bush administration. And worse!

But seriously, the level at which the initial incorrect announcement was made makes one aware of, yet again, the pockets of incompetence in some of our public bodies. Since I’m sure that Chris Blackwell is not likely to forget the first name of his good friend Jimmy Buffet, and since I’m equally sure that Mr. Blackwell would not have said to the Airports Authority, “Hey guys, Buffet will be coming on Friday,” then the announcement naturally raises several questions.

Looking at specifics now, when the relevant officials at the Airports Authority were preparing their press release (or press conference)

1. Didn’t any questions enter their heads after they first heard/saw the name “Warren Buffet”?
2. Didn’t they know who Warren Buffet is?
3. Let’s say they knew who he is (and how could they not?), wasn’t the next logical question, “Why is he coming to a simple airport opening at Boscobel?”

I guess like eager schoolboys, the Airports Authority rushed out and made the grand announcement! Sort of reminds me of that equally embarrassing grand announcement made last year by the organizers of Reggae Sumfest, that the late Michael Jackson’s children would be special guests at that Reggae Sumfest where they would accept a special award. Pathetic!
