MONTEGO BAY, St James— A number of police personnel across Area One, which constitutes the parishes of Trelawny, St James, Hanover and Westmoreland called in sick this morning, in protest against Government's failure to pay them increased wages.
According to Superintendent Merrick Watson, commander for the St James police division, 20 of his charges who were scheduled to take up duties this morning called in sick.
Yesterday 19 policemen and women did not report to work, claiming that they were sick.
Watson’s counterpart in Trelawny, Superintendent Linnette Williams-Martin, disclosed that between yesterday and this morning, 10 police officers reported sick and did not turn up for work.
In Hanover, nine persons called in sick this morning, while yesterday 10 called in sick and did not report for work.
The largest volume of absenteeism was reported in Westmoreland where sources reported that 30 persons called in sick this morning, 10 more than yesterday.
The Westmoreland Criminal Investigation Bureau has been the worst affected with 95 per cent of police personnel calling in sick, a police source said.
