SA police investigate sex link to Terreblanche killing

The suspects (one pictured here with face covered) were allegedly drunk
South African police are investigating allegations of sexual assault prior to the killing of white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche.
A lawyer for one of the two accused men said Terreblanche tried to have sex with at least one of the defendants.
Mr Terreblanche's body was found on a bed with his trousers pulled down.
Police had initially said the killing was over a wage dispute, but are now exploring the possibility that the killing was an act of self-defence.
"We are not going to focus on one thing," said Musa Zondi of the Hawks, South Africa's elite criminal investigation unit, which has taken over the investigation.
"We will investigate all pertinent facts that have a bearing on the matter."

The media must choose now whether they want to regard Terreblanche as a racist or as the rapist of a black youth

Gen Jan Mabula, head of the Hawks in North West province confirmed to South Africa's City Press newspaper that the suspects' clothes had been sent for forensic examinations.
Terreblanche was discovered at his farm in Ventersdorp on 3 April after having been beaten to death.
Two black farm workers have been charged with his murder.
Puna Moroko, the lawyer representing one of the accused men - 28-year-old Chris Mahlangu - told South Africa's Sunday Times newspaper the attack was triggered by a sexual assault.
"My instructions from my client are that there was some sodomy going on and it sparked the murder of Mr Terreblanche," he said.
The lawyer representing the other defendant - a 15-year-old boy who cannot be named - made no comment on the sodomy allegations.
Mr Moroko claimed the accused men were given large quantities of alcohol before Terreblanche allegedly tried to have sex with "one or both of them".
Terreblanche was leader of the Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), a white supremacist group, and believed firmly that whites and blacks should be kept apart.
AWB spokesperson Andre Visagie strongly dismissed the sexual assault allegations.
"The media must choose now whether they want to regard Terreblanche as a racist or as the rapist of a black youth," the City press newspaper quoted him as saying.

April 12 (Bloomberg) -- The murder of South African white supremacist leader Eugene Terre’Blanche may have been triggered by a sexual assault on one of his killers, a lawyer for the accused said.
“There was the possibility of a sex crime,” Puna Moroko, lawyer for 28-year-old accused Chris Mahlangu, said in a phone interview from Klerksdorp in South Africa’s North West province today. He declined to give more details until he had consulted further with his client.
Terre’Blanche, who was 69, was found bludgeoned to death in his bed on his farm in Ventersdorp on April 3. Prosecutors will charge two black farm workers, one of whom is a minor, with murder and crimen injuria, or intentionally damaging his dignity, after Terre’Blanche’s body was found with his pants pulled down. The two, who haven’t entered a plea yet, will apply for bail at a Ventersdorp court on April 14.
Zola Majavu, lawyer for the 15-year-old co-accused, said the possibility of a sexual assault won’t form part of his client’s defense. He declined to give further details when called on his mobile phone today.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said the state won’t respond to the allegations of a sex crime until the matter has been brought to court.
                    Investigation
A Ventersdorp court heard last week that Terre’Blanche and his alleged killers were seen at a local liquor store on the day of his murder, Moroko said. Terre’Blanche bought 18 bottles of Savannah ciders for Mahlangu, 13 bottles for the minor and a bottle of Smirnoff vodka for himself, Moroko said.
Musa Zondi, spokesman for the Hawks police investigating unit, said in a mobile-phone text message today that the police are investigating “all angles regarding the murder” and “will leave no stone unturned in the process.”
Terre’Blanche led the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, or AWB, a white nationalist group that opposed all-race elections in 1994 when power was transferred to the African National Congress. Terre’Blanche was imprisoned in 2000 for an assault on a black gas station attendant and then again the next year for beating a security guard so badly that he is now permanently disabled. He was released on parole three years later.

JOHANNESBURG: South African police are investigating the possibility the murder of white supremacist leader Eugene Terre'Blanche came after he attempted to rape the men accused of killing him.

Lieutenant General Jan Mabula said criminal investigators were examining claims that Terre'Blanche had attempted to sodomise one or both of the workers charged with bludgeoning him to death. "Yes, we are looking at this. We are looking at everything that is being alleged. We have also confiscated the clothing of the two accused," he said.

The line of inquiry follows a report that the two black farm labourers charged with the murder will argue in their defence that they were protecting themselves from the homosexual advances of Terre'Blanche, leader of the far-right paramilitary Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB).

"My instructions from my client are that there was some sodomy going on and it sparked the murder of Mr Terre'Blanche," one of the workers' lawyers, Puna Moroko, told the South African Sunday Times newspaper. "This is going to form part of our defence during trial," the lawyer said.

Police denied allegations that a condom was found on the scene. "100 per cent no, no, no," Captain Adele Myburgh, the provincial police spokesman, said.

According to the charge sheet, the two suspects, Chris Mahlangu, 27, and a 15-year-old were facing, among others, a charge of crimen injuria - unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another - for pulling down Terre'Blanche's pants and exposing his private parts after they had crushed his skull with an iron bar and chopped him with a machete.

The Afrikaans-language weekly Rapport newspaper reported that Terre'Blanche was a cruel man who had mistreated white and black workers on his farm.

It said that it had been informed of a teenage boy, a member of the AWB, who regularly visited Terre'Blanche on his farm where he was then "sexually abused". Terre'Blanche's wife, Martie, was not at the farm on the night of the murder.

Steyn van Ronge, the new AWB leader, dismissed the allegations as an attempt to smear the ex-leader. "He (Terre'Blanche) felt sorry for him (the boy) because his parents were divorced."

The AWB issued a statement denying several allegations that had sprung up after Terre'Blanche's murder on his farm in Ventersdorp in the northwest of the country. Andre Visagie, AWB secretary-general, said Terre'Blanche would not have had the energy to rape someone because he had not taken his heart medication on the day of his death.
