Spirit to charge for carry on luggage

Spirit Airlines will charge as much as US$45 each way for a carry-on bag, adding a fee that bigger airlines have yet to try.

The charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free. Spirit said it will add measuring devices at the gates to determine which carry-ons are free and which ones will incur the charge.

The new charge is US$45 if paid at the gate, and US$30 if paid in advance, and begins August 1.

The airline said on today that it reduced its lowest fares by US$40 on average, so most customers won't really pay more to fly.

Spirit also charges to check luggage.

Spirit Chief Executive Officer, Ben Baldanza, said having fewer carry-on bags will help empty the plane faster. He said the idea is to get customers to pay for individual things they want, while keeping the base fare low.
"The beauty of it is they will do what they think is best for them and will now have the choice," he said.

Spirit is based in Miramar, Florida and most of its routes run through Fort Lauderdale to Latin America.

Even though it's a minor player, bigger airlines are likely to watch to see whether customers are willing to pay for carry-ons. None of the major carriers made any immediate changes to their fees this morning.

Fees for checking bags on the big US carriers started in 2008. At first, many travelers thought they wouldn't last. But now all the big airlines except Southwest and JetBlue charge to check a bag on domestic flights.

JetBlue pokes fun at Spirit's carry-on fee by touting luggage 'outerwear'

JetBlue has become one of the first rivals to publicly poke fun at Spirit Airlines' decision to charge for stowing carry-on bags in its overhead bins. In its corporate Blue Tales blog, JetBlue notes Spirit "justifies the new fees" by claiming they will actually "improve inflight safety and efficiency by speeding up the boarding and deplaning process."

JetBlue follows that by saying: "In case you were wondering, JetBlue will continue to offer a free first checked bag, not to mention that you can bring your Mickey Mouse ears, your magazine collection, your favorite wrinkle-free slacks, and your lunch onboard, and enjoy free use of the overhead bins and more legroom than any other airline in its class."
JetBlue also suggests – tongue in cheek – that when customers can't use JetBlue, they should consider "our expertly-crafted Extrago Sherpa Shirt special outerwear" for flying an airline like Spirit. JetBlue says the shirt – which it points out is a joke and is not actually for sale – is designed to hold "an entire trip's worth of necessities, including the money you'll save by not checking or carrying on your bag." (See an image of the Extrago Sherpa Shirt on JetBlue's website.)

Well me will get my little cloth bag, stuff everything in it and put it at my feet.

Can't afford to pay for checked luggage, then pay for carry-on. Madness!
