THE Opposition People's National Party (PNP) today accused the Government of arrogance in its relations with public sector workers
“The Government has now established a troubling pattern of unilaterally and arrogantly handing down edicts to various groups and categories of workers," said Opposition spokesperson on the public sector, Natalie Neita-Headley. “The workers’ insistence on settlements have been based on contractual arrangements between them and the Government, made in good faith. The Government’s stance and tone in dealing with these matters are therefore unacceptable.”
Neita-Hardley warned Minister of Finance Audley Shaw, his state minister Arthur Williams, and Minister of Labour Pearnel Charles of what she said was a deepening mistrust between public sector workers and the the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration.
“Each group of public sector workers has acknowledged that there are obvious resource problems in the country. However, each group has also articulated that its members are disturbed by the manner in which the issue is being dealt with by the government, which has been unable to establish credible timelines for payment,” she said.
She said that Government need to improve its level of dialogue with the workers or avoid a deterioration in the delivery of public service caused by lower morale and potentially, industrial action.
