Police hold 18 young men held after Champs, 15 released

EIGHTEEN persons, all young men, were taken into police custody Saturday night following the completion of the ISSA GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Championships at the National Stadium in St Andrew. They were held at the holding area at the Half-Way-Tree Police Station.
Police said the young men, some of whom were armed with knives and cutlasses, robbed a number of persons in the Half-Way-Tree, Half-Way-Tree-Road and Ruthven Road areas of St Andrew. They were also engaged in a number of other anti-social activities, said police in a statement today.
Among the victims was a school principal who was robbed of a BlackBerry cellphone and a digital camera. The principal identified three of the young men from among the group. The BlackBerry, camera and other items were found in the possession of the three young men.
These three are still in custody while the other 15 were released on Sunday into the custody of their parents. The three young men still in custody will be interviewed in the presence of their attorneys before formal charges are laid.
