    Scary New GOP Poll

John Avlon John Avlon Tue Mar 23, 12:58 am ET

NEW YORK – On the heels of health care, a new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim—and 24 percent say "he may be the Antichrist."
To anyone who thinks the end of the health-care vote means a return to civility, wake up.
Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here's new data to prove it:
67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
The belief that Obama is a “domestic enemy” is widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come.
57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president" 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did" Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist." These numbers all come from a brand-new Louis Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.
The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."
The full results of the poll, which will be released in greater detail tomorrow, are even more frightening: including news that high percentages of Republicans—and Americans overall—believe that President Obama is "racist," "anti-American" "wants the terrorists to win" and "wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one-world government." The "Hatriot" belief that Obama is a "domestic enemy" as set forth in the Constitution is also widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come. It's the same claim made by Marine Lance Corporal Kody Brittingham in his letter of intent to assassinate the President Obama.
This poll is the latest and most detailed evidence of the extent to which Wingnuts are hijacking our politics. It should be a wakeup call to all Americans and a collective reminder, as we move past health-care reform, that we need to stand up to extremism.
John Avlon's new book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America is available now by Beast Books both on the Web and in paperback. He is also the author of Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics. Previously, he served as chief speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and was a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun.

No, they haven't just lost their minds. America was always like that. Ever seen those UFO believers getting together? Remember they vote too.

In any case, the poll would have been more informative if it had sampled the current Republican politicians only (and not just at the federal level, but at the state level). I doubt the results would have been in anyway similar. Sure some crazy ones, and most would think he was a socialist (because of what many conservative Americans consider "socialism"), but that he was the antichrist? I doubt it.

What this might mean though is that Republicans will have a more "easily led" constituency......the beginnings of garrisonization in America?

          Baby Killer Comment

Baby Killer Comment Controversy and a Complex Health Care Bill

Bart Stupak, a Democratic representative from Michigan vowed to vote “no” to the proposed Senate health care bill because of wording that didn’t stipulate that federal funds would not be used for abortions. The “Stupak Amendment” in the House bill said no federal funds would be used to terminate pregnancies.

The Senate bill didn’t have the Stupak Amendment, and so Bart led a group of democrats (and republicans) in opposing the bill, unless there were changes made that ensured that abortions wouldn’t be federally funded.
At the last minute, Stupak reached an agreement with the President guaranteeing that the law would provide strong guidance on how abortions won’t be federally funded or subsidized. This brought Stupak from a “no” to a “yes.” While on the floor speaking, someone cried out “Baby Killer!”

The Baby Killer comment came from a Republican representative from Texas who contends that the comment was misconstrued as directed at Stupak. He claims that the baby killer comment was to say that “this bill is a baby killer” and only “baby killer” was heard.

Apologies have been made, yet the controversy remains. Does the bill really ensure that federal monies will not fund the termination of life? On the other hand, many think that the outburst was unprofessional and uncalled for.
What are your thoughts on the Baby Killer comment? Do you think it was directed at Stupak, or at the bill?

Read more about the incident and find out the identity of the commenter here.

I'm pleased that Stupak has not accepted the staged apology from the Republican. Many of them like to shout out things in Congress or on the senate floor and then come back with some lazy ass apology.

I said that? Don't recall saying anything of the sort....or even addressing the issue of tone at all.

I do not think so, and the political discourse is off the scale. Democrats hated Bush with a passion, however the hatred of Obama has gotten very personal.

But she is making a ton of money, and thats all that matters.

I think she has decided to forget about running for any serious office so she can join the right wing media whores in stirring up the wingnuts into a fury and make a comfortable living doing it.

Republicans have reason to hate Obama.

The first reason is POWER taken from them.
The second is, he have them in a tail spin.
                            Thirdly they have no solution.

Politics is not a bwoy thing and a dat mi a tell unnu long time. Remember how them use to call Bill Clinton "Bobo" and how Mama Bush them trash the white house when Clinton them was moving in.

You think a only Seaga and Burell are ungracious losers Mo?

The fact is many of these republicans are bordering racist so a just that the hate a show and it in them backyard. Worst them try to drag down Polosi in every way and they also failed at that until now.

No other playbook can work on Obama except fear mongering and the "liberal" argument.

Well, the economy have to improve in the next 1-2 years or that will be the only playbook they will need.

The Dems might lose the House in November. They should keep the Senate. But 8 months is an eternity in politics.
