Internet porn haunts victims - Photos altered to show obscene acts

Persons placing photos on the Internet may be at risk of their photos being altered to show them performing lewd sex acts.

One man could be fired from his job if his boss decides that a photo which shows him with his face between a woman's legs is bad for the company's image.

The popular public figure who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the picture was circulated to several hundred people via email in October and had started out as a joke. But the joke became serious when someone sent the picture to several media houses in Jamaica.

    Circulated by friends

"Well, initially the photograph was circulated by some friends who are now abroad. Some people found it funny and emailed it to their friends, because of my popularity it kept on going and going," he said.

" ... however, somebody else got a hold of it and sent it to every media house in the island with the intention that I would lose my job," he said.

    Altered pics

The man said the photograph has also been altered, although he would not say exactly what alterations were made. He said he does not want to hurt the person who sent the photograph to the media houses, only to know their reasons. "(I want to know) Just the motive. What have I done, who have I ****ed off for them to do this?" he asked.

But he is not the only person who has suffered humiliation because of online photographs. Another young woman with whom THE STAR spoke had posted photographs of herself on the popular website HI5. However, the photographs were altered by unknown persons to show the young woman in an obscene manner.

"There was a picture of me smiling and it was changed where a penis was put across my mouth to make it appear that I was biting on it or sucking it," she said.

In another photograph, her face was placed on the body of a woman who was pushing a bottle between her buttocks.

She was able to remove the images from the website after she contacted the administrator and told them she wanted to withdraw from the website. She too just wants to know why someone did this to her.

"It's obvious that it's somebody I was affiliated with or affiliated with someone I knew because some of the information like my friends' names, they had to know me to know that. If I really knew who (it was) I want to say to them that's wrong. I mean I had friends who cried and it wasn't them," she said.

    Sex tape

Earlier this year, another tape of a 14-year-old girl being sexually abused by a group of school boys was also released on the Internet and has been seen by people overseas.

A schoolgirl who had allowed her boyfriend to videotape her while she performed oral sex on him was also released on DVD and online.

In the two cases, if the perpetrators are found they could be prosecuted for pornography. however for the other persons, there are no criminal charges that can be brought against the offenders.

According to Oswest Senior Smith, a criminal lawyer, after checks and discussion with a senior judge, he could not find any criminal offence for which the guilty party could be charged.

He said defamation might be an option, however they would have to find the person who sent the e-mail initially and prove that they had malicious intentions.

He also said if the person knows beforehand, they could get an injunction to stop the action from occurring. He also said that he could not find any laws which governed the Internet.
