ARCHITECTS SAY HAITI DISASTER SHOWS NEED FOR BUILDING CODE
    Sunday, February 14, 2010

THE Haitian disaster has put the region in an earthquake awareness mode, and has also renewed interest in a national building code for Jamaica, according to President of the Jamaican Institute of Architects Christopher Whyms-Stone.

Whyms-Stone told JIS News that while the Institute mourned the tremendous loss of life and destruction of property in Haiti caused by the earthquake, it also welcomed the renewed focus on the issue of proper building codes in Jamaica.

"This is very important, in light of the fact that the majority of our construction does not involve the professional input of architects or engineers," he said.

He noted that while preparation of the Jamaica application documents for the international building code had been undertaken by technical and professional stakeholders in the local construction industry, the country needed to go one step further to pass the national building code law.
