The police personnel who were on patrol during yesterday’s major gun and ammunition find in the Mountain View Avenue community of St Andrew and who reported the incident to their superiors, are to be promoted with immediate effect.
The National Security Minister, Senator Dwight Nelson who made the disclosure says he has had discussions with Acting Police Commissioner Owen Ellington on the matter.
In an interview with the Gleaner Power 106 News last evening, Senator Nelson said the time has come to assure members of the force who carry out their duties in accordance with the law.
Senator Nelson also disclosed that as a result of yesterday’s firearms discovery and the subsequent arrest of 11 persons which included a police sergeant, firearms left in the care of police stations and not claimed, will be destroyed.
Already an order has been given for an audit of the Police Armoury and Stores and the national security minister says greater attention will be placed on the storage of and access to firearms.
All staff members, police and civilians, of the Armoury and Stores will also be subject to interviews and poly-graph testing by a team from the Anti-Corruption Branch assisted by personnel from the national security ministry.
Senator Nelson says before too long, all other members of the force will be subject to poly-graph testing.
Meanwhile, the national security minister says the audit of armories and stores will be extended to other firearm dealers who hold or sell firearms locally.
