Ellington closes police armoury and stores closed after gun and ammo seizure

    2010-02-04 11:47:43 | (0 Comments)
Acting Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington has ordered the immediate closure of the Police Armoury and Police Stores following the seizure early this morning of 18 guns and thousands of rounds of assorted ammunition on Munster Road (off Mountain View Avenue) in St. Andrew. In addition to the guns, and ammunition a number of police ballistic vests were also seized.

A release issued by the Jamaica Constabulary Force reported the closure and also said “as of now the Police Armoury, and Police Stores are considered crime scenes. I am taking this action because of the possible involvement of police personnel in the unlawful removal and possible sale of the weapons seized this morning to criminal elements. All staff members, police and civilians, of the Armoury and Stores will be interviewed and poly-graphed by a team from the Anti-Corruption Branch. In addition, a complete administrative and security audit will be immediately done of both the Police Armoury and Stores. This audit will be undertaken by the Inspectorate of the Constabulary,” Acting Commissioner Ellington said.

So far the Police have arrested eight persons, four women and four men, in connection with the seizure. Among them is a Sergeant of Police who was immediately suspended from duties.

The guns and ammunition were seized after a routine patrol by the Kingston East Police saw persons acting suspiciously on Munster Road. This led to a search of a house and vehicles parked on the premises.

The guns seized so far include high powered weapons (M-16 rifles, shotguns, and Uzi submachine guns), pistols and revolvers.

Subsequent to the seizure this morning on Munster Road a number of coordinated operations were conducted in the St. Andrew South and the St. Andrew North Police Divisions. One of these operations led to the seizure of another firearm and ammunition.

The Acting Commissioner of Police has happy about the work of the police from the Kingston East Police Division and the quick response from other police personnel in organizing the coordinated operations.

“While I am extremely concerned with the events of this morning and the possible implications on the Police Force, I am heartened and extremely proud of police personnel who responded quickly and without fear or favour in finding the guns and ammunition and arresting one of their own who might be unlawfully implicated. I commend these officers, who represent the good within the JCF,” Ellington said.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
