Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies has died in Washington.
Professor Nettleford, considered one of the Caribbean's leading scholars, who served for a decade as the UWI’s Vice-Chancellor was pronounced dead last night around 8.30 p.m.
The cause of death was complications from a massive heart attack which he suffered a week ago in Washington. He had been in a coma ever since he was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed in a hotel room in the U.S. capital.
Professor Nettleford, a cultural icon in the Caribbean and the author of several books, academic papers and lectures, is to be buried in his native Jamaica.
He founded and also choreographed and danced with the internationally famous Jamaica National Theater Dance Company which toured Europe, North America and the Caribbean for many years.Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else - Vince Lombardi -

Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies has died in Washington.

for years my old man and i debated whether patois should be spoken and whether it should even be socially acceptable. he would always argue that rex nettleford would never speak patois, last year at a dinner at colleague's home i had a chance to ask him that question and he pshawed it...of course patois was culturally acceptable and of course he spoke and would continue to speak patois and was in favour of it being formalised.
of course, it was too late for me to pass on the info to my father.....
the professor was an amazing man and a true cultural icon

Saw Dr. Olive Lewin the other day. She is a proud Hamptonian! Looked rather frail. She did a great job with the folk singers.
Where are the people to replace these cultural icons?! The only one I can think of now is that three-named lady, whose name I can't recall at the moment.

Cultural Icons ? I went to a concert in Brooklyn or pantomine at some college in Brooklyn they hyped it up as some cultural group coming from Jamaica to perform traditional songs , the amount of R&B and american songs that were sung left me dis gusted, I was about to get up and shout where is the culture?
