    Women murders spike in January

There are indications this morning that the number of murders in January was more than the figure recorded for the similar period last year.

Based on daily releases from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), 125 people were murdered last month.

This is 10 more than the 115 murders officially reported in January 2009.

The January 2010 murder tally includes 17 women up from eight in January last year.

St Catherine has the worst murder figures involving women for last month, with six females being killed including a pregnant woman.

Based on police information five women were killed in Kingston and St Andrew last month.

Last year, there was a record 1,680 murders in Jamaica.
