The man who was taken into custody by the St Mary police yesterday after he was mistaken for a Haitian is reported to be a resident of Portland.
Family members have confirmed that Earl Anderson lives in Windsor Castle in Portland.
Anderson’s aunt, Florence Prince says they identified him after seeing his photograph during a television newscast last night.
She says he was unable to identity himself to residents because he is unable to speak or hear.
The man’s aunt says he’s not known in the area and was mistaken by residents for a Haitian seeking refuge from his earthquake ravaged country.
Reports surfaced yesterday that Haitian refugees were spotted off the St Mary coast, and that they made their way ashore.
However, Superintendent Dudley Scott of the Port Maria police says the police have no confirmation that Haitians have landed in the parish.
Superintendent Scott also says he cannot confirm reports that two Haitian men are on the run in the parish.
It had earlier been reported that two Haitian men eluded the police after swimming ashore.
But, the superintendent says personnel who conducted investigations in the area did not uncover any information to support the claim.
In the meantime, Superintendent Scott says the police are intensifying their monitoring of the coastline especially in light of the expected arrival of Haitians seeking refuge in Jamaica following the earthquake.
