Jamaica College to enter US FIRST Robotics Competition
    Career & Education

JAMAICA College, with the help of its Old Boys' Association of New York, will tomorrow launch a robotics programme that will have as a feature the school's participation in the US FIRST Robotics Competition.
Started in 1992 with 28 teams, the competition has since grown to reach 150,000 youths and is intended to inspire their interest and participation in science and technology.
"The not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programmes that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills," notes the US FIRST charity's website.
Jamaica College principal Ruel Reid said Thursday that students from the Kingston boy's school will come together to construct a robot to enter the competition in the United States for high school students.
According to Reid, at the project launch tomorrow, school officials will announce plans to establish a Robotics Lab at the school venue. The full cost of the project and the lab, which will be covered by the school's Old Boys' Association in New York, was not immediately clear.
Meanwhile, project organisers said in a release to the media that they hoped to pave the way for the popularisation of artificial intelligence technology in Jamaica and the region.
"With the rapid adoption of technology widely recognised as vital to Jamaica's progress, Jamaica College seeks to use robotics to motivate students to consider careers in a number of new areas," the release said.
The boys' school has so far been getting positive feedback to the project.
"The experience will not only be challenging and exciting, but the students will develop greater self-confidence, technical knowledge and valuable teamwork, as well as leadership skills," predicted Dr David Levermore, a research engineer and Jamaica College alumnus who heads the project technical team, in the release.
Ana Martinez, FIRST's regional co-ordinator, applauded the project even as she welcomed Jamaica College to the competition.
"FIRST welcomes the entry of Jamaica College in our 2010 competition. We applaud the pioneering efforts of Jamaica College and hope to see more participation from Jamaican and Caribbean schools in the future," she said in the release.
