Hoteliers say new tax measure is a big mistake

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) is describing the Government's announcement of an increase in the General Consumption Tax (GCT) on the sector as a big mistake.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding on Wednesday night revealed that the special 50% GCT rate on the tourism industry will be fixed at 10% come April One next year.
This is projected to earn the Government $1.2 billion.
But JHTA President, Wayne Cummings, says it is a step in the wrong direction.

He said the tax increase will have a devastating impact on the tourism sector which is still reeling from the global economic crisis.
