(CNN) -- An American Airlines plane overshot a runway Tuesday evening near Kingston, Jamaica, airport officials said.

Flight 331 was carrying 145 passengers plus 7 crew members and was going from Miami to Kingston, said Omar Lawrence, operations coordinator at Norman Manley International Airport.

There were no initial reports of casualties in the incident that happened at 10:22 p.m. All people on the plane had exited, Lawrence said.

More than 30 people were hurt in the crash

An American Airlines plane has overshot the runway on landing in the Jamaican capital Kingston, injuring more than 40 people, officials say.
Flight AA 331 from Miami, with about 150 people on board, is reported to have broken apart after the incident at Norman Manley International Airport.
Jamaican Information Minister Daryl Vaz said 44 people had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
American Airlines said the impact had broken off the right engine.
Spokesman Tim Smith said the fuselage was cracked and the main landing gear had collapsed.


Passenger Pilar Abaurrea told the Associated Press news agency of chaotic scenes when the plane hit the ground.
"All of a sudden... the plane was kind of bouncing, someone said the plane was skidding and there was panic," she said.
She said the pilot had warned of turbulence just before landing, but had said it probably would not be too serious.
Local journalist Roland Henry said the plane had halted near the beach.

He said survivors had thought the plane was landing normally before there was a series of jolts and luggage fell from overhead lockers.
Mr Vaz told the Jamaica Observer newspaper there were no reports of any deaths.
"The injured passengers have been taken to the Kingston Public Hospital," he said.
Most of the injuries were believed to be cuts, bruises and some broken bones.
Airport official Paul Hall said four people were seriously injured but gave no further details.

PASSENGERS on American Airlines flight 331 expressed outrage at what they said was the slow response of emergency services after the aircraft crashed at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston last night.

“This is an embarrassment that there was no emergency plan at this airport,” said Verona Hall, who was on the aircraft which arrived from Miami shortly after 10:00 pm.

Hall said that after the incident, the passengers were made to wait for what seemed like half-an-hour before help arrived.

About half-an hour after the mishap, the passengers were placed on a bus and taken to the Airport Police Station where, they said, authorities “just stood there staring” at them.

“It is a shame that as a country our airport is not ready to deal with a crisis,” said a woman who gave her name as Heather Robinson and who was at the airport to pick up a passenger on another flight.

We are fortunate to have dodged a second potential MAJOR airport disaster after the attempted hijacking. Both s got international attention, but were not serious enough to be all-day lead stories.
