Lyns' Trial - Swaby begins his defence, claims no knowledge of murder

One of the two men on trial for the murder of elderly Manchester couple Richard and Julia Lyn began giving his defence today.

Twenty-eight-year-old Lennox Swaby of Hopeton district Man-chester, gave his defence on oath from the witness box and will face cross-examination.

Swaby admitted today that he and his co-accused, 26-year-old garbage-truck driver Calvin Powell, of New Green Manchester, went to an automated banking machine early on the morning of December 10, 2006, to withdraw money.

He said it was a man called Nicholas Stewart who was dressed in a blue suit like the police who had given him the card to make the withdrawal, but they did not get any money from the machine.

The Crown is alleging that the men were using a bank card belonging to Richard Lyn, but Swaby has denied the allegation.

Swaby said he rented a room to Stewart in December 2006 but he did not know him before that.

He said Stewart gave him the bank card to withdraw money to pay Powell for using a garbage truck to transport a number of electrical appliances from Black River to Manchester.

Swaby said he did not know the Lyns.

The police found electrical appliances and furniture at the home of the two accused but Swaby said they belonged to Stewart who had asked them to store the items.

The Lyns were strangled during a robbery at their home between December 9 and 10, 2006.

Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh is presiding at the trial, which began on October 5.
