  • Bass Odyssey Clips Coppershot

It was a show down of giants at the Guinness Sounds of Greatness last Saturday night as Coppershot Disco faced off against Bass Odyssey.

In one of the closest matches to date, Bass Odyssey scrapped a win against Coppershot due to the technical difficulties the Coppershot sound experienced. The stage was set in Highgate St Mary for the well anticipated match of newcomers to the Guinness stage Coppershot went against the more experienced Bass Odyssey. Despite the rain that could have put a damper on the event patrons came out in their numbers to experience the fun of the sound clash competition and to win a chance at Guinness giveaways. Hosted by comedian Elva, the clash also saw the likes of Jamrock and Swatch International facing off with Jamrock coming out the winner.

The first clash saw Bass Odyssey versus Coppershot with Coppershot starting first in the juggling segment. With music provided by DJ Sanjay and toasting being interchanged by DJs Small Voice and Cutty, Coppershot whipped the patrons into a frenzy, which climaxed with a customized dub from Bugle warning Bass Odyssey that they were going to die tonight. While Bass odyssey earned a good response from their intro from Assassin, which was centered around Guinness, they failed to really move the crowd from there with a very lackluster selection and saw the crowd awarding the first round unanimously to Coppershot.

In the second round Bass Odyssey managed to gain back their thunder in the tune for tune segment, with a gospel song that had patrons moving. Bass Odyssey caught another advantage as Coppershot’s laptop malfunctioned and Coppershot’s Mc tried to explain to the patient crowd what was happening. The judges gave the edge to Bass Odyssey subtracting points from Coppershot for the glitch.

The dub-for-dub third round proved to be the most exciting of all in which each sound was required to play 7 dubs each. Coppershot come out strong with dubs from the likes of DeMarco, Tarrus Riley, Twinz of twinz and Chino who the sound played a remix of his Pon Yuh Head. Bass Odyssey came back with a custom built Ras Penco and Wasp’s Unfair Officer special that while good didn’t get the same reaction as Coppershot’s customized dubs all calling Bass Odyssey’s name. However at the deciding moment as Coppershot prepared their final dub threatening to kill Bass Odyssey with one of their own selectors, in the form of a Charly Black dub, another technical mishap caused the song to be played distorted leading to the judges subtracting points once again.

At the end of the night the judges gave Bass Odyssey 223 points to Coppershot’s 221. Judge DJ Squeeze explained that Coppershot’s technical difficulties and lack of a vintage song gave Bass Odyssey the edge in what was a competitive match.

Mi a hear say one a di Coppershot selector dem a ben sey him get robbed. Was Squingy at that clash? Could never.

Using a laptop is wayyyy easy to use. Plus the DJ programs like Serrato mek the mixing effortless instead of doing it by ear a man/ woman affi just watch the BPM readings and dem cool.

Call me a dinosaur but I prefer using CDs. Was at a function put on by the college not certain what went wrong, but we affi wait til the DJ reboot him laptop. He should at least have his CDs as backup just in case.

Coppershot cyaan complain .. dem shoulda ready fi anything. If a even sing the national anthem until the problem was resolved.

Them steal it from Coppershot. Crowd did prefer them but the judge pick who dem did want.

It wasn't squingy, it was some likkle prentice. He wasn't very impressive with his selection, but his speech was okay.

The crowd response should be the decider not the judges. One judge seh him take off points cause him never get fi hear him foundation tune and completely ignore the fact that the young audience a give bigger Forward to Tarrus Riley/Konshens than BO Oh me oh my Silk dubplate.

Okay, I will agree that the crowd reaction should be more of a decider over what the judge wants to hear. But again, if there were glitches, of course they should lose points. Just like Movado in the middle to the clash telling the crowd, "Guh suh!" and wave him hand.

Next round Bass Odyssey must ensure Squingy deh pon spot.
