Controversial ex-cop to apply for Police Commissioner Monday, 09 November 2009
st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }According to Mr. Adams, a 41 year veteran of the Force, the country needs a Commissioner who leads from the front in fighting the crime scourge.
He was speaking on Monday morning as a guest on TVJ's Smile Jamaica programme.
When the Police Service Commission reviews the applications for the job of top cop, 61 year old retired Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams will be one of the contenders.
Mr. Adams bemoaned what he termed "ceremonial commissioners" who managed crime from behind a desk.
"And I cannot understand having been a policeman for 41 years that a Commissioner, anyone for that matter, having 10,000, 12,000 persons behind him with authority with the necessary and requisite resources, a government
behind, a society behind and failing all the time, something is wrong. And what is wrong is that they have not at all mobilized their forces operationally across the length and breadth of this country," Mr. Adams said.
He also spoke of his chances of getting the job.
"And I'm not saying this to be disrespectful to anybody who may be applying for this post, I am only saying at this time, if they wanted criminal elements to be dealt with so that people go to their beds sleeping in peace, give me a chance," he said.
He however insisted that he supports the acting Commissioner and hopes that he will be successful.
Following the resignation of Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin the PSC asked Owen Ellington to act as Commissioner until one is named.
Meanwhile Mr. Adams also blasted corrupt Jamaicans.
He said rather than cast blame on police officers involved in corruption, the country should also focus on shady dealings in high places.
"We must stand up to these people. They are everywhere, they are in the Church, the private sector, government, opposition, the army civil society including some of those talking about defending rights, many of them you see them they are getting big awards and money is being granted all over the world, you ask them to account for those monies and all these things. The criminal activities that are taking place," he said.
