  • 3 months too short ... worse him a smile?

A man was sentenced to three months in prison yesterday after slapping a woman across her face at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Donovan Walters, 25, came to court to answer to malicious destruction of property. However, his actions resulted in him appearing before Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser for another charge.
Allegations are that the complainant, who came to court with her mother, went outside to attend to personal matters. While in the corridor, it is alleged that the accused slapped her because she said something that he did not like.
The police report indicates that the accused saw the complainant and told her he should be the one having sexual intercourse with her. This was, however, said in an indecent manner.
The complainant is said to have responded in a rude manner. The accused man immediately slapped her across the face. This caught the attention of the people in the court corridor.
When the RM asked Walters if he was guilty of assault at common law, a smiling Walters reluctantly replied' "yes".
The complainant then told the RM that she was suffering pain from the assault. Walters continued smiling through all of this.
He was eventually fined $50,000 or three months in prison. He paused for a second, looked at the RM, put his hand in the air and surprisingly requested "Three months, your Honour". The RM asked Walters if he was sure and he responded "yes".
