Mother, 12-y-o son among 13 killed on Heroes' weekend

    Tuesday, October 20, 2009

A mother and her 12-year-old son were among 13 persons reported murdered over the weekend.

Police blame an ongoing gang feud in the hotbed community of Mona Common for the demise of 42-year-old Angella Longmore and her son Micah Bernard.

According to the police, Longmore and Micah were at home at about 2:30 am yesterday when gunmen forced open a window and began firing wildly inside, killing the woman on the spot. Her son was taken to the nearby University Hospital of the West Indies where he was pronounced dead.

"That community has been the site of several murders and shootings in recent weeks as men armed with powerful weapons have been wreaking havoc," an officer from the St Andrew Central Police Division told the Observer yesterday.

Only eight hours after Longmore and her son met their deaths, gunmen struck in the Love Lane area of Downtown Kingston and left a man, identified only as 'Ian', dead in the roadway.

Yesterday, as crime scene officers scoured the death scene for clues, none of the residents of the impoverished community who had gathered near the body offered them any help.

"We are having trouble even trying to get his name because these people are not talking," an officer said.

However, one resident said 'Ian' was the victim of a feud.

"Is three shot buss and it look like only one catch him. Them kill him over some damn foolishness," the resident said before walking off briskly.

Meanwhile, the other murders that were recorded on the weekend include that of 62-year-old Linton Barnes and Durmaine Gidden of Linstead; Elvis Golding, 43, of Mauriseon Road in Portmore; and Richard Swaby, 24, of Old Harbour Bay - all in St Catherine; Tusan Smith, 25, of Alexander Road, and Anthony Baddal, 55, of Retreat Avenue, both in Kingston; Elvis Clarke, 30, of Rosemount Garden in St James; Jhordayne Francis, 19, of Neptune Avenue, Harbour View; Mario Johnson, 30, of Golden Grove, St Ann; and Noel Sangster of Camp Road in Hanover.

Gidden and Barnes' wife arrived home in Rosemont district, Linstead, about 8:00 pm Friday only to be surprised by three armed thugs who shot them both before ransacking the house, police said.

Their deaths came less than four hours after gunmen killed Golding and injured three persons, including a 17-year-old girl, in Waterford in Portmore. Police said Golding and the female were in his motorcar on Milton Road when gunmen alighted from a white motorcar and opened fire, hitting them. Their killers then turned their weapons on the other men who were nearby.

On Saturday, police were called to the scene of another murder in Portmore.

This time it was that of Smith who was found dead about 10:30 pm after residents of Washington Mews in Newlands heard explosions and summoned the cops.

Smith's murder came about an hour before Swaby's killing. Swaby's body was found with gunshot wounds near his shop in Old Harbour Bay. Police said Clarke was shot dead on Deans Lane in St James about 4:30. The cops said Francis' body was found on Los Angeles Drive in Harbour view about 9:00 pm Saturday while Johnson, a taxi operator, was shot and killed shortly after letting off a passenger in Bushy Park, St Ann.
