The Agriculture Ministry is moving to get compensation for the fisher folks who were affected by an acid spill in the Kingston Harbour last month.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) had reported that about 300 tonnes of sulphuric acid leaked from a container belonging to Industrial Chemical Company Jamaica Limited.

Agriculture Minister Dr Tufton said the Fisheries Division has received claims of losses amounting to just over $10 million.

He said about 120 fisher folks in the Greenwich Farm Fishing Beach area have been affected by the acid spill.

It was reported that the spill caused damage to marine and other environmental life.

In the meantime, the Agriculture ministry is reporting that NEPA has instituted criminal proceedings against the company for breaches of the Wildlife Protection and the National Resources Conservation Authority Acts.
