PRIME Minister Bruce Golding says he is prepared to do battle with persons seeking to stymie the impending restructuring of the public sector.
Golding, who was keynote speaker at the Jamaica Exporters Association members luncheon in Kingston on Thursday, acknowledged that there were "some persons in some quarters" who were opposed to proposed cuts in the public sector workforce.
He said he personally chose to lead the restructuring process as he anticipated friction and resistance from certain quarters who resented changes to their personal empires.
"There are some entrenched empires that are going to resist fiercely. There is a culture that is deep rooted that is not going to be voluntarily transformed. It is going to have to be confronted and faced down and attacked with a determination that requires the authority of the leadership of this country," Golding said.
The prime minister also announced that he'll be heading a Cabinet sub-committee, being established in the Office of the Prime Minister, that will spend the next six months overseeing the restructuring of the public sector.
He said the unit will be structured on the basis of a public-private sector partnership as it was his view that the impending restructuring required a private sector perspective in its approach.
Golding said he was making every effort to ensure he had the best brains working with him, as no mistakes could be afforded during the restructuring. He said a technical team had been instructed to review studies done over the past five to six years and selecting information relevant to the upcoming restructuring based on the findings done.
"What we've found is that the work which has been done before is still of value, even if it was done five or six year ago," Golding explained.
"The problem is that none of them have been implemented. Some of the implementation will be quite painful.
We just have to make up our minds that the tough decisions have to be made; we just have to make them," he emphasised.
Many PNP termites can expect fumigation. But JLP chi chis?? Dem safe!!
