    French 'boy sex' minister defiant

Frederic Mitterrand said all those he paid for sex were close to his own age
A French politician has refused to resign over comments that he enjoyed paying for "young boys" in Thailand.
Frederic Mitterrand, 62, the culture minister, denied that passages of his book, The Bad Life, described sexual encounters with underage boys.
Interviewed on French TV, he condemned sex tourism and paedophilia, saying he had only paid for sex with men his age.
Mr Mitterrand, nephew of late President Francois Mitterrand, faced criticism from left and right in recent weeks.

    ANALYSIS

    Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris
Frederic Mitterrand got his key messages over loud and clear: one, he was ineradicably opposed to sex tourism; two, he had never himself paid for sex with underage boys.
He also turned the tables on his attackers - accusing them of conflating homosexuality with paedophilia. From now on, anyone who reopens the attack on Mr Mitterrand risks the stigma of intolerance. Questions are bound to remain about how truthful he was being.
But culture ministers in France always have a certain licence. Most French people will take him at his word.
His book was little-noticed when it was first published in 2005.
However it returned to the headlines after Mr Mitterrand made an impassioned defence of film director Roman Polanski, who was recently arrested in Switzerland on child sex charges.
Mr Mitterrand said the behaviour of the United States, in seeking his extradition, was callous and "horrifying".
His comments in support of Polanski led the right-wing National Front to lead the criticism of Mr Mitterrand over events in his past.
France's Socialist opposition has also been sharply critical of Mr Mitterrand.
    'Not a crime'
Mr Mitterrand appeared on a French TV news programme on Thursday evening visibly angry and far from apologetic.
"I absolutely condemn sexual tourism [and] I condemn paedophilia in which I have never in any way participated," Mr Mitterrand said.

    FREDERIC MITTERRAND
Born in Paris, 21 August 1947
Nephew of former Socialist President Francois Mitterrand
Former TV presenter, documentary maker and writer
Appointed head of the French Academy in Rome in 2008
Named by Nicolas Sarkozy as culture minister in June 2009
"All the people who accuse me of that type of thing should be ashamed."
People "should not confuse paedophilia and homosexuality", the culture minister insisted, describing his actions in Thailand as an error - "without a doubt" - but not a crime.
"Each time I was with people who were my age, or who were five years younger - there wasn't the slightest ambiguity - and who were consenting," he said.
Mr Mitterrand said he retained the confidence of current President Nicolas Sarkozy and that he had not offered to resign over the controversy.
He had committed what he thought was an "offence against... human dignity", but strongly denied any accusations of illegal sexual activities.
When Mr Mitterrand's book, described by his publishers as a novel based on autobiography, was written, it received literary praise and did not generate controversy.
When he was appointed to the French government in June 2009 Mr Sarkozy described his new minister as "talented and courageous".

When Frédéric Mitterrand published a first-person narrative four years ago describing the thrills of paying for sex with boys, French reviewers hailed it as a lyrical and brave account of his own life.

“All these rituals of the … of the slave market excite me enormously,” he wrote, recounting how he selected young male prostitutes in squalid nightclubs in Thailand and rejoiced in feeling “absolutely free to play out my desire.”

Then, Mr. Mitterrand said that his goal in writing the best-seller, called The Bad Life, “was to not lie and, above all, not to lie to myself.”

Now he is the French Minister of Culture, and the same book has forced him to make an extraordinary declaration on national television that it is not really an autobiography and that he is not a pedophile.

“It's neither a novel nor a memoir. I preferred to leave things vague,” he said in a tense interview on the nightly news Thursday, after widespread calls for his resignation. “Yes, I've had relations with boys,” he added, “but you can't confuse homosexuality with pedophilia.”

Mr. Mitterrand's plummet, from literary star to political liability, began two weeks ago when he raged against Roman Polanski's arrest in Switzerland. Calling the filmmaker a “marvellous man,” he also described the charges that Mr. Polanski raped a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles in 1977 as “ancient history.”

“If the cultural world doesn't support Roman Polanski,” he said, “that would mean there is no culture in our country.”

At first, Mr. Mitterrand's indignation was echoed by a raft of French show business personalities and movie stars. But soon his comments dismissing the rape case became an embarrassment. Children's advocates and politicians on the right and left accused him of playing down sexual abuse.

On Sunday, Marine Le Pen, the vice-president of the extreme-right National Front, gave his defence of Mr. Polanski a more sinister cast. During a television talk show, she read out some of the more explicit passages from the 2005 book, accused him of preying on young boys and said his presence in the government was a “stain” on France.

Pressed on the news to say whether he had experienced all that he wrote about, he said he has lived a difficult and complicated life.

“It's not that it's not false and it's not that it's not true,” he said of the book. “It's a way to tell about a life that resembles mine a lot, but also resembles the lives of many others.”

Mr. Mitterrand, 62, may be able to hold onto his job. He said he still has the support of President Nicolas Sarkozy, who appointed him in June, and while he made mistakes, he has committed no crime.

Before the controversy over the book erupted this week, the president said he had read The Bad Life and found it “courageous.”

The French public has long been indulgent when it comes to the sex lives of powerful people. Revelations of infidelity, even children out of wedlock, have not proved fatal to political careers.

But in Mr. Mitterrand's case, many people have expressed discomfort with his admission that he sought out younger male prostitutes in notorious sex-trafficking centres like Thailand.

“Does it make sense to have a minister who boasts of doing sex tourism?” said Jean-Paul Huchon, the Socialist president of the metropolitan Paris regional council. “I think this is more than a political question. It's an ethical question.”

The initial reaction to Mr. Mitterrand's explanation – that he could always tell by looking that the young men he paid were not minors – was swift and harsh. On media websites after his appearance on the news, comments ranged from “nauseating” and “disgusting” to “pathetic.”

Only a few political figures have come to Mr. Mitterrand's defence or said that he should simply be left alone. One was Bertrand Delanoë, the mayor of Paris who is also openly gay. He said the book was a testimonial to the misery of paying for love. “It's his story,” he said, “and it's deeply moving.”

Mr. Mitterrand, the nephew of former President François Mitterrand, is a household name in France. He has served on arts commissions and film boards. He ran the Villa Médicis, a French cultural centre in Rome, for a year before his appointment as minister, reportedly at the urging of Carla Bruni, the pop-star wife of President Sarkozy. But he was best known as an author and the long-time host of cultural programs on different French television stations.

The Bad Life was his most successful book, selling 188,000 copies in hardback and 60,000 in paperback. Critics rhapsodized about it. “The life of a boy who early on was attracted to boys,” said one reviewer, and “the life of a man still attracted to boys.”

When the book first came out, Mr. Mitterrand took pains to say that he did not seek out young boys. “When you say ‘boys,' people imagine little boys,” he told an interviewer in 2005. “It's a part of this general puritanism that invades us, that makes the picture darker than it is.”

He wrote, though, in meticulous detail about the sex clubs of Bangkok where “the profusion of attractive and immediately available young men put me in a state of desire that I no longer needed to restrain or hide.”

In that chapter, he also wrote that he had read about the trafficking of adolescent boys there, “the mountains of dollars it generated with just crumbs going to the kids, the ravages of drugs that shackle them, the diseases, all the sordid details.”

That knowledge did not stop him “going back,” he said in the book. “I got used to paying for boys.”

"In 1919 Hirschfeld opened the Institute for Sexual Research in Berlin, which brought together the largest collection of works on relationships between men. However, the German homosexual scene was driven underground by the Nazi regime, during which homosexual associations and publications were declared illegal. The Hirschfeld Institute was destroyed in 1933 and until 1945 homosexuals were deported in large numbers to concentration camps."

Dont hide behind the Nazis, the question and implication is clear .Is it the gay agenda to sexploit underage boys in third world countries ? It seems as if when their personal life comes out in the media , a tale of sexploitation of young boys is always linked.

This Britisher that just got killed , he was linked to it and glorified in the british media for said perverted activity.

It is child abuse you know and it is one reason why homosexuality should never be legalised in our society because we have not the tools to fight against it except a broad ban against this activity.

          Odd question.

Is it the heterosexual agenda to sexploit underage girls ?

We have laws that deal with that, granted it could be better , why would any nation struggling to deal with a set of laws for one gender open the door for the abuse of another gender?

I will also put forth that those said laws which protect these underage girls are set by moral standards that are enforced by john public not just the civil and legal status quo.

If we ever tread along that road , child sexploitation will be big business in Jamaica.

With this recent murder of the britisher he has opened a new front against the gay agenda in Jamaica and unnuh affi deal wid it.

His numerous male lovers included Desmond, now a 45-year-old Jamaican charity worker, who told me how he and ‘Mr John’ had been occasional partners for almost 30 years, having first met on a beach when Mr Terry was in his mid-30s, and Desmond was just 16.

According to his occasional lover, Desmond, however, he was part of a group of wealthy, white expats in Montego Bay who coveted the company of so-called ‘coconut Rastas’: a crude term for handsome, young Jamaican boyfriends who, like a coconut, were deemed to be black on the outside, but white on the inside.

The expats do not pay directly for the favours of these young men, whom they meet at known gay pick-up haunts, such as beaches and bars, but would buy expensive clothes, meals, and other gifts for them.
‘Sometimes these boys can cause a lot of trouble,’ said Desmond pointedly, pondering on the reason for Mr Terry’s murder.
‘They might start ringing their guy all the time, demanding more and more things, and if he refuses they will threaten to “out” him. It’s like blackmail,’ he added.

I have to be a republican to lick out against the agenda ? You would be surprised at how many african/carribbean/hispanic/americans who are democratic who just wont accept it , can you imagine that in 1st world america.

The agenda will be defeated by the groups pedophillia tendencies.Unnuh corna look dark.
