Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby returned from a hugely successful trip to Jamaica confidently predicting a bright future for business, sporting and cultural links with the Caribbean island.
And the sentiment was echoed by Jamaican Minister for Sport, Culture and Youth Olivia Grange, who paid tribute to Cllr Whitby’s hands-on approach to further cementing links.
Responding to an invitation from Minister Grange, Cllr Whitby welcomed Jamaica’s World Athletics Championship heroes back to Kingston for a weekend of national celebrations.
And, in just three full days on the island, he met senior representatives from government, including Prime Minister Bruce Golding and a number of ministers, high profile figures from the business world, including influential media tycoon Oliver Clarke and Earl Jarrett, General Manager of the Jamaican National Building Society and sporting representatives including the fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt and new UNESCO ambassador, sprint queen Veronica Campbell Brown.
He returned with a series of jointly agreed plans for immediate action, including:
* Developing joint investment opportunities to facilitate business development and wealth creation in Birmingham and Jamaica.
* An audit of economic activity between Birmingham and Jamaica to understand how we can further develop links.
* Establishing a trade mission to showcase products and brands with a view to developing new markets.
