Personally speaking, I’m pleasantly surprised that Jamaica ranked so high, particularly when one considers that in last year’s published Human Development Index, the only Caribbean country that ranked below Jamaica was poverty-stricken Haiti. Even Guyana, which is plagued with economic problems, ranked higher than Jamaica in last year’s report.

I’m not surprised by Barbados’ high ranking, however. Quite clearly, in a number of ways, it is probably the most developed country in the Caribbean.

I’m also not surprised by the Bahamas’ fairly high ranking, and my main surprise is St Lucia which, despite an increasing crime problem, I thought would have placed higher than it has.
