  • Opposition to wage war on changes to training institutions

    RJR

The Opposition has declared that it will be waging war on plans by the Government to change the operations of various state-run training institutions including the HEART Trust/NTA and the National Youth Service.

Spokesman on Education, Senator Basil Waite, has accused the Bruce Golding administration of attempting to restructure the institutions without holding bi-partisan talks.

Speaking on Sunday night at a constituency meeting in South East Clarendon Senator Waite warned that the Opposition will not sit quietly while changes are made which could disenfranchise thousands of school-leavers.

"What is about to happen and we will not stand by and witness the destruction of the National Youth Service, we will not stand by and witness the destruction of the HEART Trust/NTA. These are name brand institutions that are contributing to youth development and the approach that I would want to see is for us as Opposition and Government to sit together because this must be bi-partisan," Senator Waite said.

During a press conference on Thursday Education Minister Andrew Holness said changes were coming to the operations of the NYS, HEART and the Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning.

Mr. Holness disclosed that a new work/study programme would reduce the number of

students gravitating towards these agencies for remedial study.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
