BUCHAREST, Romania (AFP) - Romania's ruling coalition collapsed yesterday when Social Democratic party ministers resigned to protest the sacking of one of them.
The Social Democrat (PSD) ministers walked out three days after Interior Minister Dan Nica was thrown out of the cabinet amid accusations of election fraud.
PSD leader Mircea Geoana blamed President Traian Basescu for the "political crisis which adds to the economic and social crisis" battering the East European country. The two men are expected to be running for president in the coming election on November 22.
In the evening, Prime Minister Emil Boc of the Liberal Democrats (PDL), the other ruling party in the coalition, announced that the remaining ministers will temporarily take the duties of their nine former colleagues, assuring that "the government has the capacity to function properly".
According to this decision, the current Justice minister Catalin Predoiu, an independent, will serve as interim foreign minister, Boc said.
He added that full-time replacements will be sought during the 45 days interim period. "We will ask for the Parliament's approval for the new full-time ministers," he said.
The coalition broke up less than two months before a presidential election on November 22. Under Romania's constitution no legislative elections can be called in the six months before a presidential vote.
