The Government has announced that several operational changes are to be made at the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, in Kingston, within the next 12 to 18 months, in preparation for its move to the Caymanas area of St. Catherine.
In a document tabled in the House of Representatives last week by Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Michael Henry, it was stated that plans to move the aerodrome arose from Cabinet's decision to grant ownership of the land on which the aerodrome is situated to the Port Authority of Jamaica, for expansion of its operations.
The relocation will strategically place the aerodrome next to the proposed Caymanas Economic Zone. The Caymanas Economic Zone will cost US$2.5 billion and will transform approximately 1,000 acres of land into factories and warehouses for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry and the services, manufacturing and agro-processing industries.
The Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) is also providing project management services in exploring the technical feasibility for an international port of entry at Duckenfield in St. Thomas, as well as technical support to the proposed Vernamfield airport project.
Meanwhile, the document notes that construction work is continuing on the Boscobel Aerodrome in St. Mary to extend the runway by approximately 1,800 feet and to upgrade the terminal and airside infrastructure. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of the current fiscal year.
The AAJ undertook the project in keeping with a Government directive to upgrade designated aerodromes to international ports of entry, with immigration and customs services. The Ken Jones Aerodrome in Portland and the Negril Aerodrome in Westmoreland are also to be refurbished.
